Winter 2010 Forum will focus on a topic that receives scant attention in our society - how to plan a good death for yourself and those you love. With a panel of local experts, we will explore the medical, legal and spiritual decisions that can make passing on easier for everyone concerned. Our goal is to give you the information you need to make informed end-of-life decisions and communicate them clearly to your family. A Painless way to Approach the Inevitable

Every day, we make dozens of decisions without thinking about them: what to feed the kids, how fast to drive to work, whether to hit the snooze bar. We make most of these decisions without a second thought. We go with our gut.
For other decisions, though, we have to pause, consider our options, and bring our best judgment to bear. This can be uneasy territory -- and it can get especially fraught with decisions about our health, when we often lack a strategy for weighing all the i

"If anyone...has a better approach that will bring down premiums, bring down the deficit, cover the uninsured, strengthen Medicare for seniors, and stop insurance company abuses, let me know."
-- President Obama, State of the Union
January 27, 2010
An open letter in response to President Obama's State of the Union request for a better approach to health care reform:
Dear President Obama,
During your State of the Union address, you explained why you are fighting for…

SAN FRANCISCO — Democrats in California revived a bill on Thursday that would create a single-payer, universal health care system in the state.
While the move came as questions arose over the prospects of Congress adopting national health care legislation, the author of the California bill, State Senator Mark Leno, said that the timing was coincidental. Mr. Leno said it was basically a long-planned reintroduction of a 2009 proposal that was effectively tabled because of its potential cost. But…

Everyone knows what happened last night in Massachusetts. Rather than spend time commenting on that, this post will focus on what it means for health reform. There are five remaining options for health reform to pass:
1
Ram it through. This would require the Senate and House negotiators to finish negotiations to merge their bills (which have been going on for months), as soon as possible. They would then need to send the merged bill to the Congressional Budget Office, who would take 5-1…

For decades the loudest and most influential U.S. Senate voice in favor of nationalized, government-run health care was the late Edward M. Kennedy. Now Kennedy's final political decision carries ramifications no one could have expected: the future of the nation's health care system.
As Kennedy's health deteriorated a year ago, political insiders speculated he would retire and make way for a chosen heir while his party was riding high and a special election victory seemed a…

The worst thing about being unemployed is being uninsured. When I lost my job last year I also lost our
Medical Insurance. I found some
Temporary Insurance that covered major medical expenses until I found a new job, but not everyone can afford that. I hope the new laws being passed by congress address this issue…

A health reform bill has won the support of 60 Senators and now appears headed for a successful floor vote before Christmas. One big hurdle remains: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi must now assemble a conference committee that can meld 2 significantly different bills…

I'll get straight to the point.
If Democrats remove the choice of a public option, they can't force Americans to buy health insurance.
Here's the deal, Senate leaders are all over Washington claiming they finally have a healthcare reform bill they can pass, as long as they remove the public option. After all, they say, even without a public option, the bill still "covers 30 million more Americans." The problem is that's not really true.
What they are actually talking about is something called…

Two months ago, we pointed out in our story on flu in The Atlantic that the antiviral drug Tamiflu might not be as effective or safe as many patients, doctors, and governments think. The drug has been widely prescribed since the first cases of H1N1 flu surfaced last spring, and the U.S. government has spent more than $1.5 billion stockpiling it since 2005 as part of the nation’s pandemic preparedness plan.
Now it looks as if our concerns were correct, and the nation may have put more than a bil…

Big Insurance must be giddy right now—news from Washington is that conservatives could be days away from gutting the Senate health care bill's public option.1
But this would mean disaster for real reform, and for the millions of us who want and need it.
We can't let that happen. So today, in 48 states and D.C., we're holding emergency vigils for health care reform—and we need as many people as possible to turn out to send Congress a clear message: we can't afford to wait for real reform with a…

President Obama's critics sometimes say that he is engineering a government takeover of health care or even introducing "socialized medicine" into America. These allegations are wildly overblown. Government already dominates health care, one-sixth of the economy. It pays directly or indirectly for roughly half of all health costs. Medicine is pervasively regulated, from drug approvals to nursing-home rules. There is no "free market" in health care…

The economy was in a tailspin and financial markets were frozen. Those were the headlines months ago and so to make sure that things returned back to normal, the government rushed through the Cash for Bankers programs. This program included $700 Billion for banks without any strings.
Just a couple of months ago, we had the Cash for Clunkers program. The automotive manufacturers were dying and needed some help in the sales department so a vehicle retirement program was quickly put forth that wou…

The absence of a civilized healthcare system in the United States, almost alone among wealthy nations, results in tens of thousands of unnecessary deaths every year. But if something is to be done soon to save lives it is not going to be done in Washington, D.C. It is going to be done in Sacramento, Harrisburg, Columbus, Springfield, Augusta, Denver. And then it's going to be blocked by lawsuits from health insurance corporations and preemptive language in federal legislation.…

Pacific Gas and Electric, Apple and others are leaving the US Chamber of Commerce. They feel that the chambers stated position against climate change bills puts their association with them at risk. But the US Chamber of Commerce is also a supporter of the status quo on health care, not that you are likely to hear them put it quite that way. But in ways small and large, the…
